Things To Do
The rugged countryside of the Blue Ridge Mountains provides a wide array of activities for the outdoor enthusiast. The Mountains to Sea Trail, which runs just past our driveway, as well as numerous trails along the Parkway or in nearby parks like Linville Gorge, Doughton Park, and Stone Mountain, provide miles of hiking opportunities ranging from short easy jaunts to more strenuous treks.
If you want to get on the water, take in a trip on the New River in a canoe raft or tube. Drift down the river while taking in the fresh air and beautiful scenery. Fishermen love this area for its many freshwater streams. Bring your gear and catch smallmouth bass, rock bass "red-eyes", musky and catfish.
For cyclists, the scenic Parkway is a great road for riding. Gorgeous vistas, rolling hills and light automobile traffic make it an unparalleled choice for either a casual ride or more serious training. Also, many local bike clubs stage organized events throughout the year such as the Blue Ridge Brutal, Blood Sweat and Gears, and the Bridge to Bridge Ride.
Horseback riding at Moses Cone Park or Stone Mountain as well as nearby ranches offer a less strenuous alternative to enjoy a pleasant ride in the high country.
Zaloo's Canoes is 15 minutes from us and provides tubing, kayaking and canoeing.
Motorcyclists especially enjoy the rolling hills, sweeping curves and scenic vistas along the Blue Ridge Parkway.
More relaxing diversions include shopping and browsing the antique shops and art galleries of West Jefferson and Blowing Rock. Or take in the lovely Church of the Frescoes in Glendale Springs.
Visit Rose Mountain Butcher Shoppe in Lansing (20 min.) for farm raised and home grown poultry, pork, and fresh vegetables. Weekend food baskets are available from Rose Mountain as well.
For a taste of genuine Mountain cultural life take in one of the many music festivals like Merlefest, the Ola Belle Reed Festival or the Sugar Grove festival. Visit the General Store in Todd to hear old time storytellers or catch a bluegrass pickin' session. Join a flat footing barn dance at the Jamboree in Glendale Springs or the Jubilee in Sparta.
Or simply go for a leisurely drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway where you are sure to catch a glimpse of various woodland critters as well as panoramic views of endless mountains, breahtaking sunsets and sunrises, colorful autumn foliage and cool starry summer nights.
